Bernard B. Affle

Bernard B. Affle is the traffic cop of the shell side, and he takes the job very seriously.

Without Bernard, shell-side fluid would take the lazy route straight from inlet to outlet and barely say hello to the tubes. Bernard won't stand for it. He stands firm and sends that flow back and forth across the tube bundle, over and over, until every tube gets its fair share of heat transfer. "Not that way. THIS way. Now across. Now back. Keep it moving."

He's more than a traffic director, too. Bernard holds the tubes in place and keeps them from vibrating themselves into trouble. He knows his baffle cut, he knows his spacing, and he'll tell you exactly what happens when either one is wrong: dead zones, bypassing, pressure drop through the roof, or tubes rattling around until something fails.

He doesn't get the glory. Nobody puts the baffles on the PFD. But the exchanger wouldn't work without him, and Bernard is perfectly fine being the unsung hero, as long as you admit he's the hero.
